Minister for Communications Meets With Staff of GIFEC

Hon. Ursula Owusu- Ekuful, Minister for communications has met with staff of GIFEC as part of her familiarization visits to Agencies under the Ministry. She was accompanied by her two Deputy Ministers Hon. Vincent Sowah Odotei and Hon. George Andah to interact with management and staff of the organisation purposely to have first-hand information about their operations and to foster a closer working relationship with them.

The Minister said she had come to interact and understand their challenges and what was hindering the smooth running of their operations since they form a core part of the Ministry of Communications operations. She asked the staff to feel free to air their views and to know what her outfit could do to facilitate the smooth running of the organisation.

She affirmed her commitment to assist them in whatever way possible to see the organisation move forward. The Deputy Ministers also made brief remarks on offering assistance to them for the realisation of their mandate. Hon Minister was of the view that she would have regular interactions with them since she is their board chairman and wish to discuss issues with them dispassionately.

The Administrator of GIFEC, Mr. Abraham Asante welcomed the Minister and Deputies and gave an overview of their operations. He said GIFEC is mandated to provide internet connectivity to the unserved and underserved communities of the country. The focus of their operations is to make sure that people can afford to use the internet as well as access it without any problems. Heads of various departments took turns to brief the Minister about their activities and enumerated their challenges. One major challenge that was identified was the sub-standard procurement of computers that were distributed to various institutions across the country. It was noted that most of these computers do not function properly due to its sub-standard nature. They appealed to the Minister and her team to ensure that local manufacturers of such equipment provide the organisation with computers which are of good standard.
