Communications and Digitalisation Minister visits Data Protection Commission (DPC)

The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful (MP) says the President is keen on using technology to improve the lives of the people in this country and that means Data Protection Commission (DPC) an agency under Communications and Digitalisation Ministry plays an essential role to the digital infrastructure.

According to her, the key task of the DPC is to use available social media tools to educate the public, companies, regulators about what data protection is, its importance and the difficulties one will go through if one fails to comply with the Data Protection law.

Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful revealed this when she visited management and staff of Data Protection Commission (DPC) on Friday, 18th June 2021 as part of her tour to agencies under the ministry.

The minister's visit was to interact with management and staff on the Ministry’s plans as well as agency’s activities, plans, and challenges.

Management and staff were advised to be modest in their expectations and focus more on the work. “Since the novel COVID-19 has put the world into a global crisis, people put a lot of information on digital platforms these days. Are regulators concerned about how that information is managed, and whether they are prepared to pay and learn more about how to protect that information on digital platforms,” she asked.

She urged management and staff to build their own capacity effectively to be able to provide the services that the public, companies, and customers will need. She reiterated that it is important to constantly simulate situations, engage and educate staff about Data protection and its regulation.

In the end, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful expressed satisfaction with the work done by staff of DPC and assured them that the ministry will do all it could to assist the agency to address its challenges.

Present at the meeting were the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful (MP), the Chief Director of the Ministry, Mrs. Magdalen Apenteng, the Director RSIM of the Ministry, Mr. Alfred Nortey, the Executive Director of the Commission Mrs. Patricia Adusei-Poku, management and staff of DPC and the ministry.
