Inauguration of Ten (10) Installed Automatic Weather Stations for GMET

The Minister for Communications, Hon. Ursula Owusu Ekuful (MP) has reiterated government’s commitment to equip and reposition the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) as the best meteorological institution in the sub region. The Minister was speaking at the inauguration of 10 installed Automatic Weather Stations for GMet across the country at Tema.

She said government provided funding of Four Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars (US$450,000) through the e-Transform project sponsored by the World Bank. Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars (US$350,000) was used to procure and install the 10 automatic weather stations, with the remaining Hundred Thousand Dollars (US$100,000) budgeted for a two-year maintenance programme of the equipment.

Mrs. Owusu Ekuful said the services of GMet and the scope of the end users make it expedient to equip the organization with the state of the art equipment for effective collection, processing and transmission of meteorological data to aid accurate weather forecast.

“Further evidence of the government’s seriousness in its quest to equip GMet is that for the first time in the life of the agency, government has given clearance to GMet to procure (11) operational vehicles and 4 saloon cars for the smooth operation of the agency. In this regard, GMet will be able to undertake appraisal visit to all stations scattered across the country to ensure that they are all functioning and transmitting data to the servers for quality service delivery.”

She said institutions that benefit from GMet services include the Military, civil Aviation, Marine and Agriculture sectors of the economy, NADMO, Volta River Authority and the general public through issuance of daily weather forecast and weather warnings,

The Minister however noted that GMet cannot rely on aid and government subvention but must create innovative ways to generate revenue to make the agency globally competitive.

She said government is therefore taking steps to amend the GMet act, 2004. Act 682.

Hon. Owusu-Ekuful (MP) urged GMet to monitor and maintain the new equipment to ensure its maximum utilization, to improve data collection for accurate and reliable weather forecast.

The 10 Automatic Weather Stations are installed at Big-Ada, Akuse, Sefwi-Bekwai, Axim, Akim-Oda, Abetifi, Tarkwa, Enchi, Akosombo and Tema Meteo District office.
