Minister for Communications, invited to join Membership of the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development

The Minister of Communications, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, (MP) has been invited by the ITU to become a member of the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, a joint initiative of ITU and the United Nations Education, Science and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to promote the deployment and use of broadband networks and services to the benefit of communities and end-users.

The Commission, whose membership includes senior policy-makers, government representatives, top CEO and industry leaders, international agencies, academia and organisations concerned with development, was established in May 2010 to boost the importance of broadband on the international policy agenda.

In cooperation with the private sector, the Commission defines practical ways in which countries — at all stages of development — can expand broadband access to accelerate progress towards national and international development targets.

In September 2015, the Commission was re-launched as the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development to showcase and document the power of ICT and broadband-based technologies for sustainable development.
