Press Briefing on Freedom Online Conference

The Ministry of Communications on 4th February 2020 held a Press Briefing on the Upcoming 8th Annual Freedom Online Conference scheduled to be held at the Kofi Annan Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAPTC), Teshie, from the 6th to 7th February, 2020. The theme for the conference is “Achieving a Common Vision for Internet Freedom”. The Ministry is collaborating with the Freedom Online Coalition to organize this international event in Ghana for the first time.

Hon. Vincent Odotei, the Deputy Minister for Communications, at the briefing, highlighted the conference to be used as a platform to elaborate on Digitization, Cyber Security and the importance of privacy protection for all users of the internet worldwide.

During his address to the media, Dr. Albert Antwi-Boasiako, the Cyber Security advisor at the Ministry of Communications, spoke of the important dual role Ghana was playing in the Coalition this year; as both a current Chair and a host of the annual event. He emphasized this as a result of the progress Ghana has made with regards to Cyber Security.

Issues to be discussed at the conference will cover online misinformation, child online protection, the role of human rights on the internet, social media abuse during elections and digitization. The conference will accommodate plenary sessions, panel discussions and capacity building workshops.  

The Minister for Communications, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful (MP), along with her Deputies and other government and international officials will be participating in the conference.


Freedom Online Coalition is a group of 31 governments that work together to advance Internet freedom, mainly through shaping global norms through Joint Statements, multistakeholder engagement with their Advisory Network and through coordinating diplomatic initiatives and interventions at relevant international forums. The coalition also seeks to collectively support internet freedom and protect fundamental human rights including freedom of expression, association, assembly and on-line privacy worldwide.
