The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), has met with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Stellar Development Foundation (SDF), Ms. Denelle Dixon, to discuss the rollout of the Akuna Wallet, a new digital payment platform designed to promote financial inclusion and empower Ghana’s creative sector.
The meeting which was held today, explored how the Ministry could collaborate with SDF and the Akuna Group, co-founded by actor Idris Elba, to provide seamless global payment solutions for Ghanaian creators and entrepreneurs.
Hon. Samuel Nartey George commended the initiative and expressed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting pilot testing with local content creators.
He emphasized that such innovations would enhance financial access for young creatives and contribute significantly to Ghana’s growing digital economy.
“This initiative aligns perfectly with our vision to empower the creative economy through technology and financial inclusion. We will work closely with the Bank of Ghana and other key stakeholders to assess the system’s performance and explore opportunities for integration,” the Minister said.
For her part, Ms. Denelle Dixon explained that the Akuna Wallet, developed under the supervision of the Bank of Ghana, enables content creators and freelancers to receive international payments within seconds and convert them into Ghana cedis through a secure, blockchain-based platform.
She stated that, the platform, which has an Memorandum of Understanding with the Bank of Ghana, provides each user with a virtual U.S. bank account that connects to global payment systems. This enables creators to receive payments directly from international companies and digital platforms. Akuna Wallet also integrates invoicing tools, allowing freelancers to bill clients globally and redeem payments instantly in local currency.
She said the wallet also offers virtual U.S. bank accounts, allowing users to monetize content on global platforms such as X, Facebook, and TikTok without relying on intermediaries like PayPal.
Ms. Dixon added that, the Akuna Wallet, which forms part of a broader ecosystem including Akuna Studios and Akuna Pods, is expected to be launched fully by December 2025 following regulatory clearance.
