The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), has dismissed speculation about a possible merger or acquisition involving Airtel Ghana Limited (AT) following recent regulatory interventions to protect subscribers.
Speaking at a media briefing, the Minister stressed that the current measures including the migration of AT subscribers onto Telecel’s network and the appointment of a transaction advisor are emergency interventions designed to ensure continuity of service for over three million customers.
“Let me be clear that this current arrangement is not a merger or acquisition,” the Minister emphasized. “We will only know and take that decision after the transaction advisor completes its work and presents its recommendations for consideration by Government.”
The transaction advisor, KPMG, has been given 60 days to assess AT’s debt situation, explore options for the company’s future, and make proposals to strengthen competition in Ghana’s telecom market.
The Minister further assured AT’s staff that their jobs remain secure during this period, noting that both permanent and contract employees are part of the considerations under review.
Government has urged all stakeholders including subscribers, creditors, and tower companies to remain calm and await the advisor’s final report before drawing conclusions about AT’s future structure.
