Objectives
The main objectives of the ITU’s Resolution 70, the GIICT in Ghana has the following objectives,
-
- To support the education of women and girls in ICT in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 which is aimed at achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls through ICTs;
- To arouse the interest of young girls to take up studies in sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM);
- To expose young girls to opportunities existing in the ICT sector through mentorship workshops and open day programmes to encourage them to consider professions in the ICT sector which is perceived to be male dominated.
- To serve as a deliberate measure taken by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation to bridge the gender digital gap as well as meet SDG 4, Quality Education;
The first two GIICT celebrations were held in Accra in 2012 and 2013. Subsequently, the MoCD adopted the policy of hosting the event on regional basis to give equal opportunities to women and girls across the country.
In 2019, the Ministry instituted a bi-annual celebration of the programme to expedite the training of more girls in ICT. In 2020, there was the plan to organise the GIICT programme in three (3) regions but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was held in only the Oti Region. However, in 2021, two events were observed. There are plans to organize five GIICT events in 2022 across Bono East, Bono, Ahafo, Northern and Savannah regions. Table 1 below provides information on the GIICT celebration over the past ten years:
