The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP) has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to closing the gender gap in technology through targeted digital inclusion initiatives.

Speaking at the Women in Information, Technology, and Engineering (WITE) Summit at GIMPA, the Minister emphasized the critical role of Government Policies and infrastructure investments in empowering women with essential digital skills.

“Digital inclusion initiatives specifically targeting women are vital to closing the persistent gender gap in technology by addressing barriers like limited technology access, stereotypes and biases in education and workplaces”, Hon. George stated.

He added that such efforts not only promote gender equality but also contribute to national economic growth and social equity.

The Minister outlined key government strategies to advance digital inclusion for women, including policy leadership, broadband expansion, and financial digitization efforts aimed at women-owned businesses.

He highlighted the recently introduced National Digital Economic Policy, which underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring gender equity in digital access and opportunities.

“Infrastructure development remains a priority,” Hon. George asserted. “We are investing in digital infrastructure, particularly in rural and underserved areas, to ensure women and girls across the country can benefit from digital technologies. Reliable and affordable internet connectivity for women is non-negotiable.”

A major announcement from the Minister was the government’s ongoing efforts to reduce data costs, with a special focus on students.

He revealed that a committee had been tasked with developing a roadmap for this initiative, and after receiving their recommendations, the Ministry is now working on implementation.

“I see many of you tag me on Twitter, or X, asking about the status of our data cost reduction initiative. The committee delivered the roadmap, and we are actively working on it.

I am pleased to announce that one of the key customer segments we are focusing on is students. We are developing a specific data package that will be cheaper than standard rates across the country,” he disclosed.

The Minister’s speech was met with enthusiasm from attendees, who lauded the government’s proactive stance on digital inclusion and affordability. As the government continues its digital transformation agenda, these initiatives are expected to have a far-reaching impact on women’s participation in technology and the broader digital economy.
