The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations has officially reached a new milestone in the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP) with the unveiling of the newly renovated ICT laboratory at Odorkor Saleria 1 Basic School. The refurbishment, spearheaded by the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Hon. Ewurabena Aubynn, has transformed the facility into a modern tech hub that will now serve as a primary training centre for the OMCP. This upgraded laboratory provides youth in the community with direct access to high-demand digital skills, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Coding, and Cybersecurity.
Delivering the keynote address, Hon. Ewurabena Aubynn emphasised that the laboratory is a testament to her commitment to ensuring no Ghanaian child is left behind in the global digital economy. Highlighting the weight of the occasion, she stated, “Today is not simply about opening a building or computers. Today represents our collective commitment to the future of our children, the future of Ablekuma North, and the future of Ghana.” She further encouraged the students to seize the moment, saying, ”To our learners, this facility is for you. Use it wisely, learn, explore, create, and dream big. Among you, I know there may be future software engineers, innovators, scientists, entrepreneurs, and national leaders.”
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), who joined the ceremony as the Special Guest of Honour, personally inspected the facility to ensure the OMCP portal was active and the laptops fully operational. He commended the MP’s initiative and highlighted the scale of the national investment, noting that the OMCP represents a GH₵15 billion commitment over four years. Addressing the practical value of these skills, the Minister remarked, “The beauty of technology is you can still be a student and start making money with IT… as young students, take the opportunity to get into the world of AI and the world of new technology, because that’s where the future is.”
In response to the high demand for digital training within the municipality, Hon. Sam George announced that the Ministry would scale up its support by providing a second learning centre for the constituency. He assured the community of his commitment, noting: “I’ve looked at the size of Ablekuma North… it’s a big constituency. I can assure you that in the next phase, I will give a second learning centre for Ablekuma North.”
The commissioning follows the nationwide distribution of equipment to Regional Ministers and MPs, ensuring that the infrastructure for Phase One of the OMCP remains robust and community-centred.
